May 2004 - Keeping Your Web Site Fresh
<< Return to the articles index As you may have noticed I finally got around to some much needed house cleaning. Most of you know, not only do I recommend that everyone add new content frequently to their web sites, but my own site tends to get completely rebuilt every year. Why? I get busy, and then behind on it, and after a while tired of looking at it. Especially when I am finally getting around to adding new things. Whether rebuilding or just rounding off the corners here and there, fresh content is always good. Often it goes forgotten that on a daily basis, 24 hours a day folks are surfing the net and may come across your web site. What if they had been last week and saw nothing new right away this week? "Click" - outa there. Same goes for regular customers in many cases. How many magazines do you have laying around the house that have already been read? For some of us, a complete library WITH a periodicals section That something could be a product, service or joke for the day, but for whatever reason it invites the visitor to come back. When it comes to promoting your business online, consider the benefits of updating frequently. Although theres a little time and effort involved, the results tend to pay off in the end. Be creative and try an online contest, or host a drawing for a monthly coupon or prize. That alone could bring visitors back again and again when done the right way. Other common things are no doubt the monthly sale, the "thingy" of the month type of promotions and of course the "Internet Special". On the bolder side, maybe add a chat room or bulletin board system. Immagine an embroidery company specializing in a niche market for motorcycle clubs starting up a chat room or private area for local clubs on their web site. They would likely own the Internet traffic in their area that consists of their exact target market. OK, enough immagining and back to promoting As for new content here, I added a millimeters to inches option to the Inch to Millimeter Calculator. Why I didnt think of that back when I developed it I have no clue. Obviously I decided to keep the articles section alive, and have added a couple for new Internet Time Killers. I will do my best to stay monthly this time, I swear. Above all the most exciting addition this time is Constant Contact. I wanted to create something very similar and before I got around to it, I found it! This email marketing tool is fun, easy to use, and so effective. With Can-Spam compliancy lurking, and the task of maintaining subscription lists as a constant chore, this utility makes life easy again and re-opens the window to email marketing. Give it a close look, I recommend it to everyone and it is a free trial. Back to work for me, theres two web sites that just threw me on the grill and are waiting for me to be done. Also, for updates and reminders along with other interesting bits of information please visit the new articles area, a chance to see Constant Contact in action!
